AN INFAMOUS website called The Pirate Bay has admitted taking control of victims' computers without their knowledge, it has emerged.
Those accessing the site - which enables people to share free films and TV series - may have noticed their laptops or PCs slowing down enormously when browsing its libraries.
It's now emerged that The Pirate Bay has been hijacking people's computing power so it can use it to mine cryptocurrency like Bitcoin.
The website - which is blocked in several countries - helps people illegally download films, games or music and then seized their computers to mine this digital money.
Eagle-eyed techies spotted their Computer Processing Units (CPUs), the main chip in a computer responsible for carrying out all tasks, were going at full throttle while performing simple tasks like web browsing.
As a result, users may have noticed their computers slowing down dramatically.
Those running The Pirate Bay said that the scheme is an attempt for the piracy site to earn some revenue.
Due to its illegal nature, the site has trouble getting funds from advertising like other sites on the web.
The scheme is apparently a 24-hour test, according to a statement posted on the site.
It works by injecting some code, namely a 'Monero javascript miner', into people's CPUs.
The Pirate Bay allows people to share torrents that allow them to download pirated films, games, music and TV series.
Using torrents is not illegal, but it is often used to share files that may have been pirated.
A torrent file contains tiny snippets of information including a navigation system to find other computers - so you can form a distribution group to share or receive a file you desire.
If you're using a torrent site, you'll be presented with a library to search for a particular film or piece of music.
The torrent file does not actually contain the film (or piece of music) but directs your computer to people who do hold it.
No one person holds the entire file, but instead, a 'swarm' of distributed seeders hold small chunks of it.
Using a 'magnet' link you can download this mash-up of files. and then
Using pre-installed software on your computer allows you to sew the bits of metadata back together, creating a full file which you can watch (or listen to) on your device.
This power nicking trick works similarly to how someone might funnel someone else's electricity to keep a generator going.
The Pirate Bay can make money from mining cryptocurrency by maintaining the Blockchain on behalf of others.
Following outcry from its users, the admins posted a statement on the site, which read: 'This is only a test.
'We really want to get rid of all the ads.
'But we also need enough money to keep the site running.

'PLUG AND PLAY' PIRACY What are Kodi boxes, are they illegal and have Premier League streams been shut down?
'Do you want ads or do you want to give away a few of your CPU cycles every time you visit the site?'
The miner can be blocked using a normal ad-blocker that you can download online.
The hugely popular site has been blocked by British internet service providers for some time, although canny web users can use workarounds to gain access to it.
But it was dealt a blow earlier this year when the European Court of Justice confirmed that it was infringing copyright law, causing other European countries to block it.

Whether automatically or manually downloading torrents, the client returns 'Successfully downloaded the torrent file.' but no .torrent files are being downloaded to the feed folder. If I recheck for available torrents, it no longer auto-selects the files it falsely downloaded. If I delete the contents of the feed folder when restarting the client, it again re-selects the missing torrents. Downloading again results in the same issue. This has persisted through re-installs and computer restarts. It doesn't seem connected to file names as I've tried downloading a couple dozen currently airing and recently aired shows. |

The Sun Comes Up Lyrics
That's odd, because Taiga displays that message only after checking if the downloaded .torrent file exists on disk. Otherwise it says: 'Torrent download error: Torrent file doesn't exist' The only exception I can think of is magnet links. Which RSS feed do you use? Do you have the Settings → Advanced → Torrents / Use magnet links if available option enabled? |

I do not have magnet links enabled, but I just tried switching around the RSS feeds and it seems to be a problem with HorribleSubs feeds; maybe something to do with their new web design. Anyways Nyaa.si still seems to work so I'll use that for now. Thanks for the help. |

That explains it. The links in HorribleSubs' RSS feeds are magnet links: Perhaps Taiga should display a different message (e.g. 'Found magnet link') in these situations. |

Ah, I didn't even think to check the links on their feed, silly me. Well thanks for the clarification anyways. |
